About Uganda Ekulla Initiative
Uganda Ekkula Initiative (UEI) is a not for profit organization registered in Uganda which is dedicated to protecting and conserving Uganda’s healthy land, freshwater, national parks and protected areas by partnering with local communities to support programs focusing on education, conservation, and community empowerment. We do this through a range of projects. “Ekkula” is a local Luganda word that primarily means something prestigious. In other words “Uganda the pearl of Africa”

WHAT WE DO
Protecting Nature
Healthy ecosystems like forests, mangroves and peatlands can help us mitigate the worst effects of climate change. UEI works with stakeholders and partner organizations to empower Indigenous people and local communities for the protection of these lands.
Protect Land and Water
Lakes and Rivers are the origin and engine of all life on this planet. We’re working to protect ourselves and our country by conserving healthy land and freshwater through protected areas, sustainable fishing, forest management, and working with Indigenous peoples, we’re taking action to shape a better future for people and the environment.
To secure the long-term health of the lakes and rivers and the services they provides, we must ensure effective management of marine ecosystems. In coordination with partners, UEI works with fishing villages and aquaculture areas managed by local communities to implement socially responsible and sustainable harvesting practices.
Wildlife conservation
UEI operates with the purpose of protecting wildlife involving the local community and undertaking conservation measures. UGANDA EKKULA INITIATIVE is a conservation and anti-poaching organization. We are very interested in working from a conservation educational perspective and setting up wildlife parks and wildlife refuge centers with care facilities for wildlife. Our environmental work encompasses fish farming to enrich local populations and uplifting rural communities in general (including focusing on the health of rural populations), whether that means irrigation and water supply projects.
Food and Water Sustainably
Collaborating with communities to use resources more efficiently and promoting projects that enable sustainability. Together, we can secure healthy food and clean water for all people without sacrificing the environment. Promote fishing practices that reduce bycatch to help species recover while feeding the communities.
HOW WE DO IT
Partnering with Communities
Engaging the community is a critical area of focus for Uganda Ekkula Initiative projects. All the projects are intended to support the communities in form of a trust. The Trust’s tradition will be corporate social responsibility central to the area over the years. Extensive support to schools and providing water and healthcare to the community will be our core value.
Supporting the community is an important key driver for the project who take real and justifiable pride from the employment, education, healthcare and support they give back to the local community.
UEI has supported Indigenous people and local communities in their efforts to protect their territories. In fact, it was a founding principle of our organization.
Indigenous people and local communities
While Indigenous people and local communities may have much in common, there are some key distinctions between them, including how their rights are recognized in national and international policies.
Indigenous people are defined as having customary social and political institutions, a historical continuity and attachment to specific lands, and who self-identify as such a group.
Local communities depend directly on their ecosystems for their livelihoods and as a result have developed traditional knowledge about their area.
Youth Engagement
Youth Engagement at UEI works to expand the current conservation movement by ensuring that young people from all backgrounds get the opportunity to gain necessary skills to become a force for nature.
